Abi's Writing

If I Could Travel All Over the World

by: Abi Johnson

If I could travel all over the world first I would go to Mississippi. There, I think I should eat pizza and zuccini with a chocolate sunday and dr. pepper. Next I would go to China. I would see the enormas wall of China. I would be tiny compared to that big thing. I wounder what kind of weather it would be at that point? But fun has just begun! I can't wait to go to Mexico! How will I speak Spanish? I would love to eat naochos. Yum yum! Now I'm going to Japan and eat "yuck" sushi why would I want to eat that? Coming up New York. Yay! I would be on broadway! Also I would eat popcorn and watch the newest movie coming out with my best friend, Emma. We would watch Rio! While were traveling we were going to go to Brazil in South America. I have to look sophisticated it sounds like and I will eat spagetti with tomato sause on the side too! I feel like I need some suplize right now to start my gps. Did I tell you? Well it isn't working ever sinse I started to travel. Anyway, I still have a compass ross we can use. Lets go to Europe that seems so far away. But we can get there! So in Europe lets ask someone what to do. Ok? Now its time for the funest of all Hawaii! We could go swiming and dance with the hola girls. Its time for lunch for drink I'll have coconut. Even though I didn't get all around the world I went to some amazing countrys, states, and citys. I'd like to get back home. I wanna do this again!

Love this entertainment! She obviously loves to write and loves to talk about food. All spelling errors, punctuation and writing was exactly how she wrote her essay. She scored a 5/6!

Stats

All 3 kiddos had their well visits last week. Somehow Aiden's got bumped from May and we just waited until fall to take him as well.

Here are their weight/height stats. I'm writing this, so one day, I can look back and laugh at it!

Abi: age 8-- a whopping 46 lbs. and 52 3/4 in. (4 ft., 4 3/4 in.)

Avery: age 6-- 41 lbs. and 45 3/4 in. (3 ft., 9 3/4 in.)

Aiden: age 3--37 lbs. and 37 in. ( 3 ft., 1 in.)

All are healthy! Gotta get the butter back out for Abi and stick some calories to her!

Summer Fun

Let me dust off the blog once again and let's get caught up from all the summer fun. We were able to go to Destin, Florida with my parents in late July. We stayed at a great condo right across the street from the beach. The kids had a blast and I think my parents had more fun just watching them!

Our condo had access to several pools so we spent some time swimming as well.

We spent lots of time playing in the sand. Avery was very proud of the hole he dug!

We bought the kids "surf" boards that they loved. They charged right into the ocean and had a blast riding the waves.

This boy spent a lot of time chasing waves on the beach, filling up his buckets, and playing in the sand.

We didn't take a lot of pictures, but we managed to make a lot of memories! We ate some great seafood, played some games late at night and had a relaxing time. Thanks Papa and Nana for the trip. We had a blast!

The AVE

Happy Birthday to the Avester today! Avery means full of wisdom, counsel, or sage. You are growing into such a young man, sensitive and full of love. You promised me the other day that you would always sit on my lap and cuddle with me! We can't believe you are 6 years old, starting 1st grade in two days. You read 76 books this summer and are such a math whiz. We love you very much and can't wait to see what this sixth year brings.

Summer Reading Fun

Now, some of you might think that the title here is an oxymoron, Summer Reading Fun! But I just wanted to list a few books I've read in the last month or so that I really enjoyed. People ask me all the time what I have been reading or what's good or what's new. And people ask me , when do you have time to read??? (usually I stay up really late, if I have a really good book!)

These are some books that I really enjoyed...

Sarah Pekkanen
Skipping a Beat
The Opposite of Me

Liza Palmer
A field guide to burying your parents
Conversations with the Fat Girl

Mary Kay Andrews
Summer Rental

Denise Hildreth
Savannah from Savannah
Savannah Comes Undone
Savannah By the Sea

Hope you enjoy! And yes, I'll be up til midnight or 1:00 am reading tonight again!

A crazy "librarian's" thoughts...

So, I was shifting books from one shelf to another at the library tonight (just exactly what I wanted to be doing on my birthday, let me tell you!) and had some random thoughts. Some of them are from a geeky librarian's perspective but just hang with me...

So as I was shifting books from about 3 shelves over, my triceps are burning, and I thought to myself... Those poor books that are delegated to the bottom shelves... No one sees their bright snazzy covers, no one bends over and picks them up and flips through them, no one knows their stories inside.

Then, I continued with my crazy thoughts (with an hour of this bending and shifting, my mind just ran with it). I don't want to be the book pushed to the bottom shelf, that no one sees, no one is touched by, no one ever opens and reads. I want to be out on display, picked up, flipped through. I want my life to be an open book and used fully for HIS glory!

"Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." I Corinthians 15:58

Packing for Africa

It's late Tuesday night and we don't leave until Friday morning, but guess who's packed and ready to go. A few last minute things to do in the next few days, but since I am working extra this week, I needed (for my peace of mind) to be almost ready.

My red carry on suitcase holds 5 pair of pants, 7 shirts, snacks, toiletries, socks, underwear, flip flops, flashlight, my sleep sack and 3 books. My backpack holds 1 outfit, a lot more snacks, small toiletry bag, 1 more book, and our medicines.

Awwww, guess who hasn't packed yet! Except for trying on his doo-rag...

Marriage and missions

A friend just posted this article from relevant magazine on Facebook. I took the liberty of taking the final excerpt from it, it has a great message on marriage!

So as Aaron and I embark on this trip to Africa, this will be a great reminder to us. We are so blessed to be able to serve together, to go together!

Marriage is for companionship, for raising children, and most importantly, for serving or having a mission together.

Had we studied our Bibles more carefully, we might have discovered this marriage-and-ministry mystery a lot sooner.

The Book of Genesis, for instance, takes us back to God's drawing board, where we see what He designed for man and woman. Marriage was meant for companionship—"It's not good for the man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18 NASB). It was meant for raising children—''Be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28 NASB). Most Christians would agree on those two goals. But Genesis assigns a third meaning to marriage: joint, fulfilling service. God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden and said: "Take care of this, you two. It's a big job, and you'll need each other. Together—till, plant, replenish, create" (see Genesis 2:15; 1:28).

We hunger for this today: cooperating together, meshing, working like a mountain climbing team, ascending the peak of our dream, and then holding each other at the end of the day. God has planted this hunger deep within every married couple. It's more than a hunger for companionship. It's more than a hunger to create new life. It's a third hunger, a hunger to do something significant together. According to God's Word, we were joined to make a difference. We were married for a mission.

Marriage expert Dennis Rainey says, "One of the missing ingredients of couples today is they do not have a mission; they do not have a sense of God having called them together to do something as a couple."

But often, as we begin to feel this basic longing, we don't know what it is. We get the "seven-year itch" or the "12-year anger" or the "18-year blahs." We think: What's wrong with us? Our companionship may not be perfect, but we have each other. So what are we missing?

We may be missing one-third of what God created marriage for—serving Him together. Counselor James H. Olthuis writes, “To try to keep love just for us ... is to kill it slowly .... We are not made just for each other; we are called to a ministry of love to everyone we meet and in all we do. In marriage, too, Jesus' words hold true: in saving our lives we lose them, and in losing our lives in love to others, we drink of life more deeply."

Recently a wife in San Diego expressed this experience when she wrote to the editor of Marriage Partnershipmagazine. "Over 10 years of marriage, I have found that when my husband and I focus on our own needs, and whether they're being met, our marriage begins to self-destruct. But when we are ministering together, we experience, to the greatest extent we've known, that 'the two shall become one.'"

Our television never told us about this. Our parents probably didn't mention it. Premarital counseling may not have covered it. Regardless, God has given every Christian couple a desire to serve Him together. He has placed you in your home, your family, your work, your church, your neighborhood and has said, in essence: "All this is yours. I'm giving you a mission together to care for the people around you. It's a big job, and you'll need each other. Together, join hands and make a difference."

Your mission may not be a youth group. It might be inviting people for dinner, letting someone stay in your home or helping neighbors pack a moving van. Perhaps one will help with a crisis-pregnancy center while the other watches the children. The possibilities are limitless.

But whatever marriage mission God has for you and your spouse, it will refresh your marriage and will re-ignite your reason for being together. As you venture out on your marriage's mission, you will discover your marriage's meaning.

Pay if Forward

Abi has a project due at school tomorrow called Pay it Forward. She has to turn in a picture of herself with her project and then write a story about it tomorrow at school and share it with her class.

We've all seen the movie and know the premise: to do something kind in your community and hopefully it will be passed on. Her teacher had listed some ideas of projects to choose from or they could create their own. Abi decided to write a letter and passed it out to our neighbors, friends, and some family. Here is her letter:

Hi! I'm Abi. I have a project that I'm working on for school and we have to come up with a way to pay it forward and pass on kindness.

My parents are going on a mission trip to Africa in March. So I was wondering if you could spare one thing for the kids in Africa. My parents need things like toothpaste and band-aids. You could also donate $1.00.

If you possibly have something you can give, you can drop it off at our house until March 1. Thank you for your help!

Abigael Johnson

We are so proud of her! So far she has collected $23 and lots of toothpaste, medicine, and toiletries. Since the project is due tomorrow, we went ahead and took a picture, but donations are still rolling in.

Most importantly, we are proud of you Abi, because you get it. You understand why mommy and daddy are going away to Africa next month and you are so willing to share and to give too.

When I went on a mission trip 3 years ago to Nicaragua, one friend told me that she was certain I was leaving a legacy of missions, of giving, and of going to my children. That is our hope and our dream and our passion.

Snow Days!

During this heat wave today, sunny and 51
degrees, I thought you might enjoy some snowy pictures. We have had 8 SNOW DAYS out of school. Craziness! These pictures were taken two weeks ago, when we had 4-5 inches, the most the kiddos have ever seen.

Little Man, not too excited about the outer wear! Let's just call him Randy from the movie, The Christmas Story.

Little Man got much happier after he played for awhile.

Love this boy and love this picture!

Mama had to get into all the action today. It was the most snow I've seen in years. Usually, I stay inside and am the laundry/hot chocolate coordinator but somehow I ended up outside.

Not sure why Little Man is sticking his tongue out, but it's a cute picture regardless.

Love this family picture!

We love our house covered in snow.

Happy Snow Day, but please NO MORE!

Africa: Take Two

Here is an exciting twist to 2011!

January 12, 2011

Dear Friends and Family,

Almost one year ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Africa. What an amazing and life- changing trip this was for me. Once again, I am heading to Africa. This time, however, Aaron and I have the amazing opportunity to travel together. This has been a dream of mine for several years, for us to serve together.

In March, we are heading to Ethiopia, Africa with a small medical team. Aaron will be the trip photographer. We will have many amazing opportunities: teaching English, passing out supplies, ministering to the sick and elderly, and playing and loving on many children. We will be working with Project 61 Ministries. Project 61 is the ministry that supports the children I met in the dump last year. Now 256 of these children live at a Christian boarding school, have their own bed, eat three meals a day, and go to school. You can learn more about this ministry by visiting www.p61.org. We will travel to the boarding school and spend a few days with the children as well. We will get to see Askaley, the young girl we sponsor. We have enclosed a picture from my first trip to Ethiopia.

We are writing to ask you to partner with us on this trip by praying, encouraging, and financially supporting our family. 2010 has been a difficult year for us as Aaron has gone through two job lay-offs and is currently trying to start his own business. It is a hard time for us to commit to this trip, but we both feel called to do so and trust that God will provide the financial support we need.

My trip to Africa, April 2010, changed our lives. Our priorities, our outlook on life, and many decisions we have made this year were greatly influenced by it. The greatest legacy we can leave our children is to GO, to GIVE, and to be OBEDIENT! When I told Abi, our seven year old, that we were traveling to Africa in March, her first response was what she could to raise money to buy things for the children. It is so precious to me how God is already molding her life and giving her a heart to serve.

The cost for us to attend this trip is $2500 each. This includes all of our travel, lodging and meals. This money is due by February. Thank you for considering being a part of our support team. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. If you’re able to help support us, please send checks to our address below. All donations are tax deductible and should be made out to Thompson Station Church.

Blessings,

Aaron and Pamela Johnson

New Year's Resolutions

Happy 2011!

I am not one to make New Year's Resolutions. In fact, I am kind of anti-resolutions.

However, the last few years, I have been living it up. Making my bucket list and checking it off. Carpe diem, seize the day, and all that jazz. So I have a few ideas/goals/dreams for this year that I gotta share.

Sleep more, eat more, read more, exercise more... Reduce my weekly grocery budget...Head back to Africa... memorize more Scripture...Date my husband more...Be still and listen more, wait patiently, less anxiously!

No pressure, right? Nothing too hard. Well, I did exercise today, so that's a start!

Carpe diem, ya'll!
